Salem Vision 2020 Action Plan  - Bringing the Vision to Life!

Salem Vision 2020 is a collection of ideas, energy, and projects from a wide representation of the Salem community.

Thoughtful reflection, creativity, and enthusiasm of those living, working, studying, and playing in Salem’s City Center have led to this unique collaboration and these 24 projects.

Your contributions - participation in neighborhood or community meetings, surveys, sponsorship, and commitment to continued involvement - have created the necessary momentum and action to bring Salem Vision 2020 to life.

Community Outreach: Getting to the Projects

Salem Vision 2020 is all about tomorrow.  More than a thousand Salem residents have joined the process.

Generating Ideas - Forming the Vision

On December 5, 2007, some 280 area residents met at the Salem Conference Center to discuss their shared vision for the downtown – what they like and what’s missing Salem Vision 2020 Community Forum - (CCTV select 12/05/07) .

Community Forum Results:  Vision Elements , Project Ideas, Discussion (12/13/07)

What is a City Center?  A city center creates jobs and attracts new businesses.  It contributes to the unique character of our city.  The city center provides a gathering place for cultural activity and serves as a hub to connect people, cars, pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit.  Listen to what people said on a CCTV special assignment - select 2007, Vision 2020 Word on the Street - (CCTV select 11/15/07).

Salem Vision 2020 is a community-wide process that will help shape the future of the city center, the area that includes the downtown and West Salem business districts, plus the Capitol Mall, Willamette University, and Salem Hospital campuses.  Learn what people said in the first survey.

Celebrating Success on the Projects

On Tuesday, March 31, 2009, nearly 100 community members attended the third Vision 2020 open house at the conference center(view CCTV Coverage of Spring Forum )  Participants saw that maintaining a vibrant, attractive City Center is an important piece to Salem’s image and identity. They were also able to see the design of the new downtown historic building markers, help choose the movies for this summer's Movies in the Park series, experience www.SalemAlive.com - Salem's new one-stop website for events and activities, learn about new downtown restaurants and retail shops, provide input on future changes to Commercial Street to accommodate bicyclists, and provide input on locations for public art downtown.

Salem resident, Virginia Green, was recognized at the forum with the first annual Visionary Award for exemplifying the spirit of Salem’s Vision 2020. She was selected due to her unique role on the Vision 2020 Action Team and for taking the lead in projects highlighting the historic character of downtown. Green is the only Action Team member to serve as an individual (not representing a larger organization).
