Salem Public Library continues to support Oregon Reads 2009
As the Oregon sesquicentennial year approached, the Oregon Library Association posed the question: What if 50,000 Oregonians read the same book in our sesquicentennial year? After extensive planning, it’s time to find out through Oregon Reads. Oregon Reads 2009 is a community reads program that will take place in libraries across Oregon, including Salem Public Library. The Oregon Library Association has chosen three books and is encouraging all Oregonians to participate. The books are:
|
For Adult Readers
Stubborn Twig: Three Generations in the Life of a Japanese-American Family by Lauren Kessler
|
For Children
Apples to Oregon: Being the (Slightly) True Narrative of How a Brave Pioneer Father Brought Apples ... Across the Plains by Deborah Hopkinson
|
For Young Adult Readers
Bat 6 by Viriginia Euwer Wolff
|
The special programming series, which was scheduled for March-May of 2009, is now over, but all titles continue to be available for check-out from the Salem Public Library. In addition, the library has 3 book kits of Stubborn Twig for area book groups. The kits include 12 copies of the book and suggested discussion questions. Kits can be reserved and checked out through the Information/Reference Desk at the Central Library. Arrangements can be made in person or by phone at 503-588-6052.
The Oregon State Library has also issued a special "150 Oregon Books for the Oregon Sesquicentennial" book list of suggested reading for Oregonians of all ages.
