The Information Technology Department (IT) is responsible for the City of Salem's technical environment, operations and support. Working together with other city departments, IT provides solutions and support for hardware, software, data, and policy needs. The mission of IT is to manage the business of IT efficiently and effectively to deliver high quality information, technology, and consulting services to the City of Salem. This allows city departments to meet the needs of our citizens.

The IT Department is composed of two divisions: Network and Technical Services, and Systems and Programming.
Network and Technical Services
The role of the Network and Technical Services Division is to:
- maintain a secure and reliable network for the City
- support all network servers and computers
- maintain and increase the capacity and ability to manage electronic data
- support email operations
- provide central office telephone systems and support
- provide Reprographics support
The Division maintains desktop and laptop computers, HP UNIX Servers, networked Windows servers, and maintains a backup and recovery system in support of enterprise systems throughtout the region.
Systems & Programming
The role of the Systems and Programming Division is to:
- manage and support new and on-going computer application services to all departments
- provide custom programming support
- administration for all City databases
- provide citizen access and services via the internet
- provide enterprise geographic information systems (GIS) support
