Elections / Run for Office

The City Recorder is responsible for administering the City's municipal election activities including local referendums, initiatives, and candidate filings for Mayor, City Council and Judge.
To obtain information on how to run for office, you should set up a meeting with the City Recorder by calling 503-588-6091 or e-mail khall@cityofsalem.net . The City Recorder will provide you with the necessary documents that must be filled out and provide you with a list of deadlines that must be met. Other election information, such as campaign finance, can be obtained by visting the Oregon Secretary of State website.
2012 Elections
The following offices will be on the May 15, 2012 Primary Election ballot:
* Mayor
* Councilor Ward 1
* Councilor Ward 3
* Councilor Ward 5
* Councilor Ward 7
The two candidates receiving the highest number of votes for each office shall be entitled to a certificate of nomination as the nominees for such office, and their names shall appear on the ballot at the general election; provided, however, that whenever any candidate shall receive a majority of all votes cast for the office for which he or she is a candidate, that person shall be the only nominee for such office and only that person shall receive such certificate of nomination and his or her name only shall be printed on the general election ballot.
The term for Mayor is two years; the term for Councilor is four years. The term for Judge is four years.
