Book Discussion Groups

Salem Public Library hosts two book discussion groups: Books for Lunch and Books for Dessert. The groups are organized and led by staff members. Meetings are free and open to the public. The Salem Public Library Foundation and the Friends of the Salem Public Library have teamed up to sponsor the purchase of book kits for the book discussion groups. Books for the upcoming month's discussion are available for checkout at each meeting and then, up to the date of the meeting, at the Information/Reference Desk. More information is available from the Information/Reference Desk in person or by phone at 503-588-6052.

Book kits are also available for check-out and use by area book groups.
A complete listing of available book kits and instructions for reserving the kits is available online.

Books for Lunch is a book discussion group meeting monthly from September to May. Meetings are held at 12 noon on the third Wednesday of each month.

Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln's Killer by James L. Swanson
12 noon Wednesday, November 18
Anderson Room A
Discussion Leader: Phil and Maureen Caudill

The murder of Abraham Lincoln set off the greatest manhunt in American history - the pursuit and capture of John Wilkes Booth. From April 14-26, 1865, the assassin led Union cavalry and detectives on a wild twelve-day chase through the streets of Washington, D.C., across the swamps of Maryland, and into the forests of Virginia. At the very center of this story is John Wilkes Booth, America's notorious villain. A Confederate sympathizer and a member of a celebrated acting family, Booth threw away his fame and wealth for a chance to avenge the South's defeat.

Based on rare archival materials, obscure trial transcripts, and Lincoln's own blood relics, Manhunt is a fully documented work, but it is also a fascinating tale of murder, intrigue, and betrayal.

The 19th Wife by David Ebershoff
7 p.m. Tuesday, November 3
Anderson Room A
Discussion Leader: Leslie Cortez

It is 1875, and Ann Eliza Young has recently separated from her powerful husband, Brigham Young, prophet and leader of the Mormon Church. Expelled and an outcast, Ann Eliza embarks on a crusade to end polygamy in the United States.

Ann Eliza’s story entwines with a tale of murder involving a polygamist family in present-day Utah. The story combines epic historical fiction with a modern murder mystery to create a brilliant novel of literary suspense.
