Red Yarn
Boogie Woogie Concert

Red Yarn (Andy Furgeson) and his puppet friends will have preschoolers and parents singing, clapping, stomping and giggling during his high quality, dynamic musical performance.
Doors open to the public at 10:15 a.m. on a first-come, first-seated basis. These programs, funded by the Friends of Salem Public Library, take the place of the regularly scheduled Tuesday Storytimes.

A Christmas Carol

Ebenezer Scrooge is a nasty, mean, snarling man with no care for anything other than his money.
In this two-person children’s theater performance based on the classic tale by Charles Dickens, Scrooge’s one and only friend visits him as a ghost and starts him on a journey that melts his icy heart and teaches him the joys of caring for and giving to others.

Doors will open at 1:45 p.m. and seating will be available on a first-come, first-seated basis. This event is free and open to the public thanks to the support of the Friends of the Salem Public Library.

Discovery Kids - Preschool Adventures

How can so much fun be good for you!!? Discovery Kids offers families of children ages three, four and five a chance to share a story and enjoy related activities that boost the early literacy skills preschoolers need in order to be ready to read and write when they enter school.

Creative Kids - After-School Adventures

Grades 2 to 5

Here’s a new fun-filled opportunity for kids in elementary grades to explore their creativity and sense of innovation. Each month we’ll offer a different hands-on activity such as a guided art project, craft or even robotics. Parents are welcome to drop their kids off for the duration of the program.

Lego Party - Monthly

Kids with their grown-ups are invited on the third Saturday of every month for an hour of unstructured Lego play. Legos are provided. Bring your imaginations! No sign-ups are necessary.

Read to a Pet

2nd and last Saturday of the month
Children’s Room

This program offers children a relaxing, non-threatening way to improve their reading skills. Visiting dogs and cats have been trained and certified as therapy animals by Paws for Love and are mellow and friendly. This is a drop-in program, and sign-ups are not necessary.

Elementary grades

Get in the holiday spirit with the Youth Services staff at the library.  We will provide craft materials and some inspiration for kids to create festive holiday ornaments and decorations.

Holiday Book Bingo
2-3 p.m. Wednesday December 23

Kids are invited to play a special holiday book bingo, and earn a chance to win a free book for their home library. Pre-readers should bring their favorite grown-up.

All day in the Children’s Area

Families are invited to drop in and enjoy classic board games and a craft available in the Children’s Area during open library hours.

Reptile Man

Free tickets are available at the Youth Services desk at 10 a.m. the day of the performance.
Doors will open 15 minutes before the program and seating will be on a first-come, first-seated basis.  Tickets will expire 10 minutes before the performance and any families waiting without a ticket will be seated until the Auditorium is at capacity (285 seats). 

We regret that tickets will not be available to daycare or school groups due to the limited seating and popularity of these programs.  These special shows are provided thanks to the support of the Salem Public Library Foundation.

Grades 3-5

An exciting program especially for middle elementary kids. Join us in a hands-on demonstration of the library’s new collection of Finch robots, designed by Carnegie Mellon to introduce children to the art of computer programming.  In addition we will have Lego mazes set up for children to run Hexbugs, and a supply of recyclables to make their own technologically simple robot to take home.
