The 2015 Summer Reading Club is here!

This summer, children from birth through elementary school can discover their super-power during Salem Public Library's Summer Reading Club. Staff and volunteers will be encouraging readers (and listeners) up through grade 5 to READ! READ! READ! with the theme "Every Hero Has a Story" and young adults, grades 6 to high school graduates are encouraged to "Unmask!" Sign-ups have begun and will continue through August 1st at the Salem Public Library Youth Services desk or online.

 

Wednesday Summer Performances

Join us for fun family performances this summer. All shows are in Loucks Auditorium. (Free) Tickets are required the day of the show for Reptile Man and Children's Educational Theatre performances, and will be distributed beginning at 10 a.m. on the day of the shows. All other shows are first-come, first seated. Doors open 15 minutes before each performance.

All performances are made possible by the Oregon State Ready to Read grant.

 

 

Read to a Pet
1:00 – 2:30 p.m.
2nd and last Saturday of the month
June 13 & 27
Children’s Room

This program offers children a relaxing, non-threatening way to improve their reading skills. Visiting dogs and cats have been trained and certified as therapy animals by Paws for Love and are mellow and friendly. This is a drop-in program, and sign-ups are not necessary.

 

Monthly Lego Party
2-3 p.m. Saturday, June 20
Story Rooms A&B

Every 3rd Saturday of the month, kids with their grown-ups are invited for unstructured Lego play. Legos are provided. No sign-ups are necessary.

Terrific Tuesdays

As part of the Summer Reading Club, special craft and activity programs are offered for children ages 5 and older each Tuesday from June 30 to August 4.

 

Zip! Zap! Zoom! Super Hero Crafts
Tuesday, June 30,
2:00 p.m.
Ages 5 and up 

Wear your favorite superhero costume, test your super skills, and create tools to help achieve your heroic deeds.

Helping Heroes!
2-3 p.m. Tuesday, July 7
Anderson Rooms A & B

Visit with heroic animals and the heroic people who rescue them. Learn about what different rescue and animal organizations do, and make gifts for animals in need.

 

 

Karate 4 Kids
2 p.m., Tuesday, July 14
Anderson Rooms A & B

Martial arts is a fun way for both boys and girls to achieve fitness and focus. Experts from Karate 4 Kids will teach some of the skills it takes to be a martial arts hero.

 

 

Super Lego Party
2 p.m. Tuesday, July 28
Anderson Rooms A & B

Put your capes on and soar into the Super Lego Party! Use your special imaginative powers to make your creations. Come up to the microphone and tell about your super lego creation! Legos are provided for use during the program.

 

 

Elephant and Piggie Party (All Ages)
2 p.m. Tuesday, August 4 

Spend some time this summer with our heroic friends Gerald and Piggie. We’ll share stories, play games and create some crafts to transform ourselves into those lovable characters.
