New! Early Literacy Station

The Salem Library Youth Services Department is introducing a new Early Literacy Station for the youngest computer users — toddlers and preschoolers. Early literacy skills are the skills children learn about reading and writing before they are actually able to read and write.
The station features games and activities that are aimed at developing children’s early literacy skills in the target areas of reading, language, math, computer skills, and art. It includes a color keyboard and mouse designed especially for little fingers, and is a useful learning tool to be shared with an adult.
This station is made possible by generous donations and the Ready-to-Read Grant administered by the Oregon State Library.
Children and families can find fun activities every day at Salem Public Library. Books, events, and activities for children from birth to 18 are offered throughout the year, including:
Family Friday Film Fest - Free family films are shown monthly on the second Friday.
Discovery Room - The Discovery Room is a unique offering of Salem Public Library, a mini-children's museum offering several educational, hands-on exhibits throughout the year. The theme changes every quarter and children are sure to find reasons to return again and again.
Youth Book Groups - Two books groups - the Children's Choice Book Club, for kids in 2nd-4th grade, and Book Chat, for kids in 6th grade and older - offer children and a favorite adult the chance to read and discuss a book together in fun environment.
Read to a Pet - In partnership with Paws for Love, therapy dogs visit once a month to give kids a chance to practice reading to a furry friend.
Toddler Totes - Preschool-aged children can choose the themes that interest them most, and take home these special backpacks filled with books, videos, games, music and more that help them learn. Totes are available for toddlers and preschoolers, with a special series of totes offered in Spanish.
Brain Boosters - Periodic parent education classes aimed at teaching fun science and math activities that boost early literacy for children ages 3-5.
Public Use Computers - Computers offering educational games and filtered Internet access are set aside for patrons up to age 18 in the Youth Services area on the third floor of the Central Library and in the children's area at the West Salem Branch.
