Computers providing Internet access and Microsoft applications are available to cardholders and visitors during all open hours of the Salem Public Library. All patrons will be required to present in person their library card or limited computer-use card in order to reserve and use a computer. The use of a card that is not yours is not permitted.
Computer use cards are free and are available to regular patrons without Salem Public Library cards. Patrons will not be issued a computer use card if they have a regular Salem Public Library card. Salem Public Library cards or computer-use cards are available with indentification which includes a photo and name from the Audio-Visual Circulation Desk or the Registration Desk on the Main Floor of the library.
Out-of-area visitors with valid picture ID will be given one-day visitor access codes. These are available at the Audio-Visual Center Reference Desk.
Each patron may use Internet stations for a total of one hour per day (in a single or multiple sessions.)

Reservations
You may request the next available computer or make a future reservation for up to 3 days in advance. Reservations are valid until 10 minutes past the reserved time, after which they are canceled automatically. Each patron may reserve only one computer at a time.
Central Library (Lower Level) and West Salem Branch
- Reservations for Internet computers in the Audio-Visual Center and at the West Salem Branch can be placed using a self-service Reservation Station. Stations are available in the Audio-Visual Center and at the West Salem Branch. Reservations can also be made in person at the Audio-Visual Center Reference Desk or the West Salem Branch Circulation Desk. All reservations, except those for one-day visiting users, require a library card or computer-use card.
- Walk-Up use is available for computers not being utilized. All computers display availability information. Availability and session length are subject to pending reservations. Please follow the on-screen instructions at any computer not in use and be prepared to provide your card number.
- 4 database computers are available for research at the Central Library,main floor, 1 is available at West Salem.
Youth Internet, Homework, and Education Games Computers
Reservations are made in person at the Youth Services Reference Desk only.
Privacy Statement
The following data is retained by the library for the purpose of reporting usage statistics. It is logged each time a computer is used:
- Computer Name/Number
- Date of use
- Session start time
- Session end time
- Session length
Our computer management software recognizes valid users by matching the card number provided with a corresponding number in the library patron database. It does not record or retain name, address, phone number, SSN, etc.
Library user information is confidential. However, not all Internet sites keep information confidential. State law requires that a court order is necessary for the Library to release any personal information. |
