Updates

Notice of Intent to Acquire

On December 14, 2009, the Salem City Council will consider approving a purchase and sale agreement for the acquisition of an additional 30 acres of the Battle Creek Golf Course property. For more information about the intent to acquire additional property at Battle Creek Golf Course, see Battle Creek Golf Course Notice of Intent to Acquire.

Bridge Repair and Removal Plan

As of December 1, 2009, all the bridges at the City-owned portion of the Battle Creek Golf Course have either been removed or repaired, with the exception of the westernmost bridge (See Battle Creek 8 on Figure 2.)  This bridge was intended for repair, but upon further examination it was determined that it was too rotted for repair. Due to its location and access issues, it will be replaced with a new bridge, designed and installed by the City by the end of January 2010. See previous information regarding the bridge repair and removal plan.

Background

In 2008, the City of Salem purchased 38.52 acres in the southern portion of the former Battle Creek Golf Course and an adjacent residential property (Figure 1). The site is at the confluence of four urban streams (Waln, Battle, Powell and Scotch Creeks), and is crossed by a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) floodway and extensive floodplains. With this acquisition, the City intends to develop a multipurpose open space area that provides seasonal flood mitigation, environmental enhancement, and passive recreation.

A master plan will be developed to establish the framework for the entire City-owned property, and will be developed interactively with input from the community. The master planning process will begin in Fiscal Year 2009-10.
