Automatic Bill Payment

Simplify bill paying by signing up for the City of Salem's free and convenient Automatic Bill Payment service. By enrolling in this service, your financial institution will automatically deduct funds from your checking account to pay your Salem utility bills. Your bill will always be paid on time, so if you are away from home, you won't have to worry about a late payment.

With Automatic Bill Payment, you will continue to receive a Salem utility bill showing the amount due and the date it will be paid by your financial institution.

How to Sign Up

Fill out form, voided check, and mail

To enroll, complete the authorization form (also available in Spanish) and return it with an original voided check from the financial account you would like debited. Because the authorization form must contain original signatures, it is not accepted by fax or email. Please mail to:

Continue to pay your Salem utility bills as usual until you receive one that reads "Do Not Pay. Amount will be deducted automatically." This can take up to six weeks. When you receive this notice on your bill, it means that your bill is now being automatically deducted from your financial institution.

What is Automatic Bill Payment?
Automatic Bill Payment (ABP) is a recurring payment option. Your bill will be paid automatically by electronic transfer of funds from your bank account. What could be easier or more convenient?
Will I continue to receive a monthly utility bill?
Yes. You will continue to receive your bill as usual. If you have a question about your bill, you can call us and get it resolved.
How long will it take for automatic bill payments to begin after I send in the authorization form?
Enrollment can take up to six weeks, so remember to keep making monthly payments until you receive a bill that reads "Do Not Pay. Amount will be deducted automatically."
Why do I need to attach a voided check to enroll?
Attaching a voided check is required to ensure all bank account information is correct. It helps to avoid mistakes that may slow down the enrollment process.
What if I plan to change banks?
If you plan to change banks, please notify us by calling Customer Services Utility Billing at 503-588-6099 so we can stop payment from your current bank account. You then simply complete and sign a new authorization form and attach a voided check from your new bank account.
