Storm Drainage System

The storm drainage system is a network of ditches, culverts, pipes, and access structures that work together to direct the flow of stormwater in the city. Stormwater that falls on streets and buildings is channeled into the storm drain system that redirects the flow to local waterways. Much of the storm drainage system exists underground as an unseen system of pipes.

Manholes and rectangular cleanouts are placed along the underground pipe system to allow access below. Sometimes a storm drain structure may be on private property. Sometimes emergency access to the structure is necessary. If you have a storm grate, manhole, or cleanout on your property, keep the area around the lid clear of vegetation and debris. Occasionally someone from the City may request access to the structure for inspection or repairs. If you see a structure with an loose or damaged lid, call Public Works Dispatch at 503-588-6063.

Storm grates direct stormwater from the street into the underground pipe system. Sometimes in the fall, leaves can cover grates causing water to back up into the street. City crews watch for this occurrence and clear away leaves when grates become clogged. If you see water backed up because of a blocked grate, call Public Works Dispatch at 503-588-6063.
