Signs and Sweeping

The Signs and Sweeping Section provides a variety of services to the City’s street system such as street sweeping, street right-of-way mowing, street sign fabrication and installation, pavement striping and markings, fall leaf removal, barricade and traffic control, and the City’s Adopt-A-Street program.

Each year crews perform over 15,000 curb miles of street sweeping, clean-up spills and remove hundreds of dead animals from City streets. During the fall months over 3,350 cubic yards of leaves are removed from City streets. That is equal to over 330 dump truck loads of leaves! City staff manage Adopt-A-Street program which coordinates the efforts of citizen volunteers who work to keep our roadside areas clean of trash.

Section staff mow nearly 700 miles of roadside grass and clear vision hazards such as weeds, brush, and shrubs.

The City has over 500 miles of streets that it is responsible for. Each street has various types of signs and markings such as traffic signs, street name signs, reflectors, striping, crosswalks, yellow curbs, parking stalls, and stop bars. The Signs and Sweeping Section makes, installs, and maintains all of these signs and markings. The City Sign Shop makes over 1,700 new signs each year.

Any time there is a parade, political rally, or major event in the City, you will find Signs and Sweeping staff providing barricades, traffic cones, and other traffic control. The City can quickly employ two traffic control trucks and two sign trailers to help reroute and inform motorists during emergencies, traffic incidents, and construction zones.
