August 3, 2017
Intermittent road closures of Union Street NE between Commercial Street NE and Front Street NE will begin on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 and last through October in preparation for a new traffic signal at the intersection. The City will also make other street, sidewalk, and bicycle lane improvements as part of an effort to make it safer for people walking and biking between the Union Street Bridge and downtown Salem.
The project was identified as a priority by community members in the
Central Salem Mobility Study and was adopted by the Salem City Council in 2013. According to project manager Julie Titchbourne, the improvements “...are the first step in connecting the Union Street Bridge with 12th Street NE as part of the Family-Friendly Bikeway.”
Most of the construction will occur during the day, Monday through Friday. The street will remain open August 19–21 to accommodate any potential traffic during the weekend of the eclipse.
The $1.13-million intersection improvement began in June and is jointly funded by Riverfront-Downtown Urban Renewal Area and the Salem-Keizer Area Study Metropolitan Planning Organization.
