The City of Salem Prepares to Welcome Visitors Coming to Observe the 2017 Eclipse

July 31, 2017

The City of Salem is excited to welcome visitors from around the globe to view the eclipse on August 21.

“Opportunities to showcase what our City has to offer on such a national and international stage don't come around very often,” says City Manager, Steve Powers. “We are focused on providing a safe and enjoyable experience for all who attend this event.”

Planning for the 2017 Eclipse began many months ago when the City assembled a team of representatives from various City departments to prepare for the event. The planning team has been working diligently, under the leadership of Salem Fire Chief Mike Niblock to ensure that the City is prepared for the 2017 Eclipse.

Chief Niblock assures Salem residents, visitors, and local business owners that public safety is the City’s first priority in planning for the 2017 Eclipse. “We’ve been getting ready for a while,” he says. “We have been proactive in our readiness efforts, are working collaboratively with our public safety partners, and have plans in place to address potential concerns.”

There are some practical things Salem residents, visitors, and local business owners may want to consider as they prepare for the Eclipse event. Everyone is encouraged to review the City of Salem website to find City-specific 2017 Eclipse information and answers to frequently asked questions.

The City also worked with regional partners to create the website SalemAreaEclipse.info as a way to share important regional information and answer many questions regarding the eclipse event. Kenny Larson, Communications and Community Engagement Manager says, “The interactive website is designed for three populations to quickly access information: residents, visitors, and local business owners.”
