Heritage Tourism
Whether you are visiting Salem or a long-time resident, there are plenty of places to visit and learn about local history. The Bush House Museum is a Victorian residence built by pioneer editor and banker Asahel Bush II. Historic Deepwood Estate, with its Queen-Anne style house, is right next door on 4.5 acres of historic gardens. A.C. Gilbert's Discovery Village is a children's museum located in downtown Salem's Riverfront Park. The Gilbert House (1887), Bush House (1878), and Deepwood (1894) are all listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Willamette Heritage Center, comprised of the Marion County Historical Society and the Mission Mill Museum, offers visitors the opportunity to see the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill and the Lee House, the oldest frame house still standing in the Pacific Northwest, along with other period buildings that were relocated to the site. See the useful links below, including some fun walking tours.
