New Fire Station Construction

Salem Fire Station One to undergo Seismic Strengthening and Energy Efficiency Improvements – Some Staff Will Move to New Locations

Salem Fire Department Administration and Fire Prevention staff are moving to temporary offices beginning Monday, March 15 to make way for seismic strengthening and energy efficiency improvements on the Salem Fire Department’s headquarters fire station.  The station, located at 370 Trade St SE will still house fire engines and response personnel.  Response personnel will be quartered in a temporary building located directly behind the fire station.

The project is expected to be completed by early December 2010.  Staff will return to the station on completion.  Fire Prevention staff are located in the Salem Civic Center, Room 305.  Administration staff will relocate to the Information Technology Department facility at the corner of Church and Trade.

All current phone numbers, email addresses, and mailing addresses remain the same during the relocation.

Walk-in customers of the Fire Prevention Division can come directly to the Salem Civic Center Room 305.  Walk-in customers for Fire Administration should call 503-588-6245 for directions.

Fire Station One was built in 1970.  The project includes reinforcing the building so that it will better survive an earthquake.  This work, funded in part by grant money received from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and in part by the 2006 Fire Bond, will complete seismic strengthening of all city-owned fire stations.  Other work to be accomplished includes replacement of the heating, ventilating, and air conditioning system with a high efficiency system, and replacement of interior lighting, again with a more energy efficient system.  All this work was included as part of the 2006 Fire Bond and is the last major project funded by the bond..
