December 12, 2007 - 2-Alarm House Fire, Market St

Salem Fire Department responded to a call for a house fire in the 2400 block of Market St NE at 9:35am on Wednesday, December 12, 2007.  Multiple calls were reported to 9-1-1 and a second alarm was dispatched at 9:39am sending additional resources.  Four people were in the residence at the time and were evacuating as firefighters arrived.

First arriving firefighters reported that fire and smoke were seen coming from the front of the single-family residence. Salem firefighters made entry into the residence and found flames in the living room and kitchen areas. Firefighters extinguished the fire within about 10 minutes of their arrival. One firefighter was transported to Salem Hospital, evaluated and sent home for the remainder of his shift.

Fire investigators determined the fire to have started from the improper use of an extension cords.  The cord had been stretched around a corner and bunched-up under the couch.  The weight of the couch had pinched the wiring, which caused the fire to start.

The residence was estimated to be a total loss.  The dollar amount is unknown at this time.  Red Cross will provide overnight accommodations for the occupants.
