October 17, 2007 - Structure Fire, 19th Street NE

Woman Escapes House Fire

On Wednesday, October 17, 2007 at 07:56 AM, a first alarm assignment (3 Engines, Ladder Truck, Medic Unit and Battalion Chief) responded to a Structure Fire in the 1700 block of 19th Street NE.

When firefighters arrived on scene they discovered light smoke coming from the single family dwelling.  They entered the structure and found kitchen on fire.  Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire before it could spread to the rest of the home. The fire was extinguished within 10 minutes of arrival on scene.

The owner was at home at the time of the fire. She originally tried to extinguish the fire with a portable fire extinguisher, but the fire extinguisher did not work.  She quickly evacuated the home.

The fire was caused when a microwave was set on top of the stove and the knob was inadvertently bumped into the on position.  The fire quickly spread throughout the kitchen.  No injuries were reported.

Damage estimate is $10,000 ($6,000 structure and $4,000 contents).
