Salem is centrally located to many of the best secondary schools and universities in the State .  In fact, we have more large public schools in Oregon's top 10 list than any other city.  Some 14 of the States's top public colleges and universities are within minutes to an hour away.

Home to the second largest school district in Oregon, Salem's has an enrollment of 39,000 students and employs 2,000 hardworking and dedicated teachers and counselors.  And, the school district is growing - a testament to the number of young families moving to and growing in Salem.  The district has 45 elementary, 10 middle, and six high schools, as well as eight secondary alternative programs, and four charter schools.

Salem is located within an hour of several stellar universities, colleges, and vocational schools. The region offers a complete variety of education options from small private schools to large state campuses. Salem is located in the heart of these educational opportunties.


Elementary and Secondary Education

Salem-Keizer School District is the second largest district in Oregon with an enrollment of more than 40,000 students in its 67 schools.  The District employs 3,500 offering diverse and challenging academic courses.  The grammy-award winning music programs and high-performing athletes make the District unique.  For more about Salem-Keizer Public Schools.

Higher Education

In Salem

Chemeketa Community College offers a challenging curriculum first time college students or those returning after years away.  Through its small classes, affordable tuition and convenient class times and locations, Chemeketa help students reach their goals. More than 64,000 students took a class offered at the College in the 2006-07 academic year.

Corban College offers more than 50 professional and liberal arts programs of study - including business administration and education.  Corban is ranked by U.S. News and World Report as fifth in the West's Best Baccalaureate Colleges for 2008.

Willamette University is a nationally recognized liberal arts college with graduate programs in law, business and education.  More than 1,800 undergraduates benefit from Willamette’s 11-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio and 165 years of tradition as the First University in the West.

Near Salem

Clackamas Community College is a two-year college providing academic and career education. Clackamas Community College serves more than 26,000 students each year.

ITT Technical Institute, from its Portland Campus, this leading private college system offers technology-oriented programs.
 
Lewis and Clark College is a private institution located in Portland.  Through its three schools, the College offers undergraduate courses in arts and sciences; graduate and professional courses in education and counseling; and graduate and professional courses in its school of law.

Linn-Benton Community College is a two-year college providing general education courses, professional technical training, transfer courses and continuing education classes. 

Oregon Health and Science University.  As the State's only health and research university, OHSU brings together education, research, patient care and community service in its schools of medicine, nursing, dentistry, science and engineering, and pharmacy.

Oregon State University's programs in Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Forestry, Pharmacy, and a variety of other areas are nationally recognized for high quality.
OSU's $194 million in funded research for 2007 ranks it among an elite group of research universities nationally.

Portland Community College offers university transfer courses and professional-technical career training at its three comprehensive campuses.  At its five smaller centers the focus is on job training, specialized programs and  transfer.  During the 2006-2007 school year, over 86,164 students attended PCC.
 
Portland State University.  More than 24,000 students are enrolled in the University's eight colleges and schools: liberal arts and sciences; urban and public affairs; graduate school of education; engineerign and computer science, business administration; extended studies; fine and performing arts; and social work.

Reed College is a liberal arts college noted for rigorous academics and independent study.  More than 1,400 students are enrolled at Reed in the Portland college's 22 departmental and 12 interdisciplinary majors in the arts, sciences, humanities, and social sciences.

University of Oregon offers a broad spectrum of opportunities for learning in the liberal arts and professional programs in architecture, arts, business, education, journalism, law, and music and dance.  Located in Eugene, more than 20,300 students are enrolled.

University of Portland is an independent, four-year Catholic institution.  The school has more than 3,200 students and 280 professors.  Today, the University is ranked among the top 5 schools in the West by U.S. News and World Report.

Western Oregon University is located in the Monmouth-Independence area, about 20 minutes from Salem.  The University's student body of about 4500 undergraduates and 400 graduates in business and economics; computer science; creative arts; humanities; natural sciences and mathematics; physcology and social science.
