Economic Development Strategy

Work with Willamette University and others to draw more track and field and other sport championship events to Salem on a regular basis.

Status Update

AT the college level, the primary sports that can be attracted to Salem are track and field, baseball, cross country, and softball.  Within the last two years, the city has provided both Willamette University and Western Oregon University with letters of support in an effort to bring national championship track and field meets to Salem. In addition, the City of Salem and the Salem Convention and Visitors Association have partnered to re-establish Salem as home for Amateur Softball Association (ASA) and United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) national and world tournaments held at the Wallace Marine Park Softball Complex. In 2007, the City of Salem hosted three national softball tournaments. There are two national ASA softball tournaments scheduled for 2008 and bids for national softball tournaments have been submitted for 2009. The city works with local sports clubs, colleges and universities, and the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) to attract local, state, and regional sports competitions to Salem.
