Historical Assets Strategy

Develop plans for a Salem Historical Center that potentially includes Native American and Black history.

Status Update

A private group interested in developing an Oregon African-American Museum in Salem has incorporated as a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation and a bank account has been established.  It is being spearheaded by Chairperson Willie Richardson who can be reached at atfelegance@qwest.net. Local participants include Vice Chair Jack Caynon, Chief Legal Counsel for Salem Hospital; Kimberly Moreland, Senior Planner in the City's Planning Division of the Community Development Department, recently elected Secretary; Mary Oberst, Attorney and Oregon's First Lady; and Lee Pelton, President of Willamette University.  The City continues to support this group as they develop their mission and vision statement and identify goals for the next 6 months.
