Infrastructure & Maintenance Strategy

Pursue grants for railroad bridge rehabilitation.

Status Update

The Union Street Railroad Bridge project will convert the unused 1913 steel lift bridge and timber trestle across the Willamette River into a facility for pedestrians, bicyclists, and other non-motorized users.  The purchase included $550,000 for future maintenance from Union Pacific Railroad.

Carter & Company, Inc., a Salem contractor, started repairs to the trestle in Wallace Marine Park in early April 2008.  Construction is proceeding as expected. Completion is expected next winter.

A ground breaking ceremony was held Thursday, March 6, 2008.

Five grants have been received: 1) Recreational Trails Grant, $98,000; 2) Local Governments Grant, $478,700; 3) Transportation Enhancement Grant, $1,346,376; and 4) Cycle Oregon Grant, $2,500; Urban Renewal Grants $1,075,000.
