The Salem Police Department works to build community partnerships with the citizens of Salem, realizing the police cannot solve the problem of crime without the help of neighbors.
On August 7, 2007, officers attended 121 National Night Out celebrations, contacting over 3,700 neighbors. Officers stressed the importance of knowing your neighbors and offered crime prevention tips.
Our volunteer unit offers free home security surveys to residents. In 2006, volunteers conducted 81 surveys and in 2007, 38 surveys have been conducted to date. The department offers a Citizen Patrol program that gives residents the chance to take a more proactive approach to the safety of their community. Our police volunteers are also active in traffic issues; our Disabled Parking Patrol Volunteers have issued 138 disabled parking citations so far in 2007, and our Radar Reader Board volunteers have sent out over 450 speed violation letters.
We are starting our 19th Citizen Academy class with 25 participants. Over 340 citizens have graduated from the Citizen’s Academy since it first began in the fall of 1998.
Our Downtown Bike Patrol Team actively addresses livability issues in the downtown neighborhood. To date, in 2007, officers have made 1,310 arrests, issued 377 citations, and 644 exclusion notices (which includes the downtown core, parks and the Transit Mall). Officers meet regularly with the Neighborhood Association and business owners to get input and address any ongoing issues.
