Public Safety Strategy

Reduce fire emergency response times.

Status Update

The fire and emergency medical response time objective is to respond to 85% of all priority emergency incident calls within 5.5 minutes or less.  The objective was achieved 71% of the time in 2006.  As of December 2007, the department had met the objective on approximately 67% of emergency responses.

The objective was not achieved as frequently in 2007 because of an increase in fire and emergency medical response demand.  In 2007 the fire department responded to 926 more priority incidents than in 2006.

A peak activity engine was introduced into the system in early August 2007 and is currently operating ten hours per day, five days per week.  The engine provides another resource to deal with increased call volume and cover for engine companies unavailable due to emergency response, training, or airport services.
