Public Safety Strategy

Maintain police and fire staffing at minimum of current staffing levels and work toward a higher per capita ratio of police officers.

Status Update

An additional firefighter position was included in FY 2006-07 to allow for the staffing of a peak activity engine company. The engine company was placed into service in early August 2007. The FY 2007-08 budget adopted by the City Council maintains FY 2006-07 staffing levels and increases the peak activity engine’s hours of availability.

In FY 2007-08 the City Council authorized the addition of five police officers.  In the past four years, the City Council has added 18 officers, two part time community service officers, a crime prevention analyst, two records specialists and a half-time staff assistant to the Police department.

Achieving the City Council's goal of 1.5 officers per 1000 population would require the addition of 21 officers.
