Information Technology

The Information Technology Department (IT) is responsible for the City of Salem technical operations and environment. Working together with other city departments, IT provides solutions and support for hardware, software, data, and policy needs. The mission of IT is to provide excellent leadership and customer service toward technology solutions to support the city, so that departments are better able to meet the needs of our citizens.

Professional staff at IT play a vital role in departmental operations and overall success. IT positions within the city include:

  • Oracle Database Administrators
  • Novell Network Administrators
  • GIS Analysts and Architects
  • Visual Basic and SQL Programmers
  • Windows OS Technicians
  • UNIX HP System Administrators
  • Linux and Web Administrators
  • ColdFusion and ASP programmers

 

The IT Department is composed of three Divisions:Network and Technical Support, Applications and Programming, and Geographic Information Systems, providing the essential components for a complete technology organization.

Network and Technical Support

The function of the Network and Technical Support Division is to:
  • maintain a secure and reliable network for the City
  • support all network servers and computers
  • maintain and increase the capacity and ability to manage electronic data
  • support email operations
  • recommend the required infrastructure that is needed for the City to offer citizen access and services via the Internet
The Division maintains over 1100 desktop and laptop computers, 11 HP UNIX Servers, 84 networked Windows servers, and maintains a Tivoli Enterprise backup system.

Applications and Programming

The role of the Applications and Programming Division is to effectively manage and support new and on-going delivery of computer application services to all departments.  This Section provides custom programming, support for off-the-shelf software,  as well asdatabase administration for all City databases.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

The IT GIS Division is responsible for the ongoing reliability, performance, and support of the City’s GIS program, building and maintaining an integrated and compatible Citywide GIS.  The GIS Division provides geospatial services to all City departments and to citizens.  The GIS offers a comprehensive overview of City assets and is organized in  “layers” of thematic information.  For more GIS information, click here .
