Bicycle Safety Tips
Helmet fitting checklist:
Pads
1. Top pads: Thin or remove pads to allow the helmet to rest at its lowest point for optimum coverage. 2. Side pads: use thinner or thicker pads on sides to provide snug coverage evenly around the helmet on the rider’s head. 3. Put the helmet on the child’s head. Make sure the front of the helmet is facing front! 4. The helmet should sit level on head, just above the eyebrows or the frame of eye glasses. 5. If rider walked into a wall would the helmet hit first instead of their nose? If not, more adjustment is needed.
Chin Strap
6. Put the helmet on the child's head and fasten the buckle. 7. Is the chin strap snug against the chin? The V of the side straps should meet just below the ear, with no slack and no helmet movement. 8. If not snug, adjust the length of the rear and front straps and V location. 9. The chin strap should not hang down visibly and you should not be able to fit two fingers underneath it.
Think You're Done?
10. Have the rider shake head around. Does helmet move? If so, more padding or tighter straps could be needed 11. Push helmet up from front. Can you move the helmet to expose the forehead? If so tighten the straps in front of ears (possibly loosen back straps). 12. Push helmet up from back. Does the helmet move more than one inch? If so tighten rear straps.
