Fire Safety Class Lineup

Firefighter Bill and Flash would be happy to come to your classroom and teach a class on fire safety. They'll even bring along a few of their firefighter friends to help with the class and answer questions. There are classes suitable for all ages, and covering a variety of topics. You can also win fabulous prizes, including ice cream and pizza parties, t-shirts and more!

Firefighter Bill and Flash (K-1st Grade)
Fire Fighter Bill & Flash present a class consisting of Stop, Drop, & Roll, Crawl Low in Smoke, and the importance of checking the operation of smoke detectors. Students are challenged to test their smoke detectors to be eligible for a chance to win an ice cream party with some of the Salem firefighters.
Things teachers need to know:
- This presentation is best for individual classes. Several classes can be presented back-to-back if multiple classrooms desire the training.
- The presentation lasts approximately 20 minutes .
- Children will have a chance to win an Ice Cream Party.
- Crews are in service and may be called away for an emergency prior to, or during the event.
Fire Safety Trailer (2nd Grade)
Fire Fighter Bill will bring out the Salem Fire Department's new Fire Safety Trailer to help teach children about the uses of 9-1-1, Smoke Detectors and Escape Drills in the Home. This is a great hands on training that allows children to actually crawl low in smoke and make a 9-1-1 call.
Things teachers need to know:
- This presentation must be scheduled with at least two back to back classes.
- The presentation lasts approximately 20 to 30 minutes .
- There is live Safe Smoke that is used. Some students may feel uncomfortable in this enviorment. We suggest that teachers discuss this with the students prior to the event.
- We need approximatley 50 feet of space to bring the trailer in.
- Crews are in service and may be called away for an emergency prior to, or during the event.
Bicycle Safety (3rd Grade)
Fire Fighter Bill will come into the class room and focus on the importance of wearing your bicyle helmet and/or other helmets when riding your bike, skate board, scooter, and skates. He will cover the importance of proper fit and where to get a free helmet.
Things teachers need to know:
- The presentation lasts approximately 20 to 30 minutes.
- Students are encouraged to bring their own helmets from home.
- Crews are in service and may be called away for an emergency prior to, or during the event.
Escape Drills in the Home (4th Grade)
Fire Fighter Bill teaches a fun and active way for children to learn how to escape from a fire in their home.
Things teachers need to know:
- This presentation lasts approximately 25 minutes.
- Children will have a chance to win an Ice Cream Party.
- Crews are in service and may be called away to an emergency prior to, or during the event.
Fire Safety Quiz Show (5th Grade)
Students play a fire safety quiz game for fun and prizes. Prizes include: pizza parties, ice cream parties, t-shirts, and many other items.
Things teachers need to know:
- This presentation lasts approximately 1-hour.
- Crews are in service and may be called away for an emergency prior to, or during the event.
Student Firefighter Challenge Course (7th & 8th Grades)
Students go through an firefighter obstacle course. Course events include rolling hose, donning turnout gear, answering fire safety questions, and much more. The students play for prizes for their team.
Things teachers need to know:
- The event lasts approximately 50 minutes.
- Crews are in service and may be called away to an emergency prior to, or during the event.
Fire Extinguisher Training (6th Grade to Adult)
Students learn fire extinguisher techniques such as P. A. S. S. (pull, aim, squeeze, and sweep). They will also learn the different types of fire extinguishers and fires each is designed to fight. Students practice using a fire extinguisher in our fire pit. Extinguishers must be provided by the student.

- The training lasts approximately 40 minutes.
- Crews are in service and may be called away to an emergency prior to, or during the event.
Jr. Firefighter Challenge (Special Events)
The challenge promotes fire safety, fitness, and team work. Children wear a real set of turnouts and run through a fire fighter course with a real Salem Fire Fighter.
Things teachers need to know:
- This presentation requires non-rainy weather and is an outdoor event.
- The presentation lasts approximately 45 minutes.
- Crews are in service and may be called away to an emergency prior to, or during the event.
