Disposing of Cigarettes Properly

Salem firefighters respond to hundreds of fires each year.  A large number of those fires are caused by improperly discarded cigarettes.

Cigarettes are discarded improperly in a number of ways.  They are often thrown from car windows, which can cause bark dust and grass fires.  They are discarded into combustible containers around the home.  Such containers can smolder for hours before free burning occurs.  They are often left smoldering on combustible bedding or furniture after smokers fall asleep or forget about them.

In the United States over 14,000 fires each year are determined to be caused by improperly discarded cigarettes.   In 2006, fires cause by cigarettes was the #1 cause of fire deaths accounting for 700 fatalities and 1,340 injuries.

The Salem Fire Department recommends that you discard cigarettes in a non-combustible container, such as a metal coffee can, that is filled with sand or water.   In addition, you should never throw a cigarette out of your car window.  Not only could it start a fire but it is also against the law.
