From June 23 through July 6 fireworks may be purchased in Oregon. Salem firefighters are asking that you purchase only legal fireworks and use them safely.
Last year fireworks were the cause of 13 fires in the City of Salem.
Only those 16 or older may legally purchase fireworks in Oregon.
Legal fireworks are those that produce only smoke, sparks or fire, and do not explode, eject balls of fire, fly into the air or travel more than twelve feet on smooth ground.
Fireworks that are not legal in Oregon are any that explode, fly into the air, or behave in an uncontrolled and unpredictable manner.
People caught with illegal fireworks could face fines of up to $500.00 and could be held financially responsible for the cost of extinguishing a fireworks caused fire.
Keep in mind the safety tips below, and help keep your friends and family safe this Fourth of July.

1) Purchase Legal Fireworks (Pictured above are only legal June 23rd - July 6th)
(Pictured above are legal all year)
2) Wet down any grassy or combustible area surrounding your lighting area. (Always light your fireworks on pavement or vegetation free dirt, never on grass)
3) Fill a metal can full of water. (Do not use a plastic can)
4) When lighting, make sure you have a water hose charged and ready.
5) Stand by with the hose until the firework is spent.
6) Once spent, dispose of fireworks into the metal can of water. Let the can sit for at least 24 hours before disposing of its contents.
Remember, handle all fireworks as if they were live, whether or not you think it has been spent.
