Public Book Discussion Groups

Salem Public Library now hosts TWO book discussion groups: Books for Lunch and Books for Dessert. The groups are organized and led by staff members. Meetings are free and open to the public.

The Salem Public Library Foundation has sponsored the purchase of book kits for the book discussion groups. Books for the upcoming month's discussion are available for checkout at each meeting and then, up to the date of the meeting, at the Information/Reference Desk. More information is available from the Information/Reference Desk in person or by phone at 503-588-6052.

Each year, Salem Public Library develops a Best Books list, based on the collected recommendations of staff, patrons, volunteers, and critics. The current list - Best Books of 2007 - is available in a printable pdf format!

Books for Lunch

Books for Lunch is a book discussion group meeting monthly from September to May. Meetings are held at 12 noon on the third Wednesday of each month.

Antonia

In this classic novel, the reminiscences of New York lawyer Jim Burden about his boyhood in Nebraska, particularly about a young Bohemian girl named Antonia Shimerda, are set against the backdrop of the American assimilation of the immigrant. Cather spins an exciting and tragedy-laden tale in a bleak landscape, revealing a fascinating view of the human spirit. This is one of the great novels from the author who also gave O Pioneers! and Death Comes to the Archbishop to the world.
