Urban Forestry Program

Cannery ParkThere are 130,000+ street trees in Salem located in the right-of-way or parking or curb strips. These trees are the responsibility of the City of Salem Department of Community Services, Parks Operations Division. If these trees are removed, pruned, or damaged, this should be reported to the Parks Operations Division. Effective July 24, 1997, City Council adopted changes to the Salem Revised Code, Chapter 86, "Trees and Shrubs" which make it illegal to top a public tree in Salem unless it is mandated by state law. A permit is required to prune or remove a street tree. Be sure to always call before you cut. If you have questions about City trees and obtaining permits to prune or remove, contact the Parks Operations Division at 503-588-6335.

On November 16, 1981, Salem City Council determined that a historic or Heritage Tree identification program should be undertaken so such trees could be recognized. These trees add to the pride of Salem, Oregon.
