What is a Heritage Tree?
Salem's Heritage Trees are native and non-native species that are recognized for their historical connection to pioneer settlement or as unique specimens not commonly found within the city limits. On November 16, 1981, Salem City Council launched a historic or heritage tree identification program so that such trees could be recognized. The following list includes all Heritage Trees currently designated by City Council.

Location: 1234 Commercial St. SE

Description: This old growth tree merits consideration due to its size - it measures 17 feet around the trunk! Like other tall conifers in our area, the Douglas fir can be hard to identify because the branches may be very high. Look below the tree and find a cone. Douglas firs have tridents or "3-pronged pitchfork" bracts on the cones.
