The Salem Police Department Community Response Section (CRS) currently consists of a Street Crimes Unit, DART, and a Crime Prevention Unit. There is a total of eleven officers, two sergeants, one corporal, and one lieutenant. CRS responds to complaints, such as: Drug Activity Complaints and Prostitution Complaints, as well as to community events, including: Neighborhood Watch, Neighborhood Association Meetings, No Meth, Not In My Neighborhood Task Force, Security Surveys, Safety/Crime Prevention Presentations, and National Night Out. CRS works at all levels, from knock and talk investigations, to drug related search warrants, and undercover drug investigations.
In July 2004, in response to an increase in the use and sale of illegal narcotics within the City of Salem, Salem City Council approved four additional CRS officer positions and one sergeant position to focus specifically on Drug Activity Complaints (DACs). This five-person team, coined by the acronym DART,(Drug Activity Response Team) are a sub-unit of CRS. These uniformed officers will respond to Drug Activity Complaints and conduct knock and talk investigations.
