FAQs

Q: How long does the hiring process take?

A: Generally the process from application to job offer takes about four (4) months.

Q: I have not been physically active this year. Will I be able to pass the physical fitness test?

A: The odds are against it. It's important to prepare well in advance. You must pass all five events taken in sequence, one right after the other.

Q: What is the starting pay for lateral entry officers?

A: Generally speaking each applicant is placed on the pay scale depending on their years of experience and education. The lateral entry range is $3906 to $4983 per month, and at top step with  10% incentive pay, the pay is $5754 per month.   A call to the recruiters can give you an approximate range  but the exact step will be determined at final job offer.

Q: Do lateral entry officers have to go through the police academy again?

A: No. A two week equivalency class and department training supplant the academy.

Q: What are the work schedules?

A: All new officers must serve in the uniform patrol division. Officers work four, ten hour shifts per week. New officers can be assigned to any of the various (six) shifts depending on need.

Q: How long is the training period?

A: Your first full year is spent in both formal and informal training. Probation is for 18 months. DETAILS: 6 weeks orientation; 18 weeks field training; 16 weeks Academy for entry level recruits.

Q: Do I have to buy my equipment and uniforms?

A: The police department will furnish you with all needed equipment and uniforms. There is nothing to buy.

Q: Do you have testing for "out of state applicants" to help cut travel costs?

A: Yes! Efforts will be made to complete as much of the testing as possible with the fewest trips possible. Contact our recruiters to discuss.

Q: What is the maximum age limit for a police officer?

A: There is NO maximum age limit.

Q: I meet all but one of the listed minimum requirements. Does the Salem Police Department allow any latitude to the requirements?

A: No, all applicants must meet or exceed ALL minimum standards without compromise. The minimum standards listed are just the minimum standards. In order to insure integrity, credibility and professionalism of the men and women of the Salem Police Department, the standards and selection process for police officers are very high.
