FAQ's

As the Graffiti Program Coordinator for the Salem Police Department, Kim screens reports, works with her interns who help photograph and repaint, and coordinates groups of local volunteers to help remove or paint over graffiti.  If you, your family or community group would like to lend a hand on a graffiti cleanup, the help will be appreciated.  You can call, fax or write and say you want to participate. Please say how many volunteers you are providing. Kim will be able to contact you & others when she has an area requiring a larger group to assist with graffiti removal.  Tools, materials and supervision will be provided.

The SPD works with other agencies concerned about graffiti to find out what has been successful for them in fighting graffiti. SPD also works with other agencies asking us to share information (like our ordinance and tracking methods) as they try to start graffiti abatement programs.  If you live outside the city limits of Salem and are interested in the Graffiti Abatement program for Marion County, visit http://www.co.marion.or.us/SO/Resources/programs/pbgp.htm

Graffiti affects the entire community, a citizen's sense of safety, and it costs private property owners and business owners time and money.   Citizens should take an active role in reporting graffiti to help keep Salem a desirable community.  Please help Kim identify graffiti locations so she can continue her work keeping Salem free from taggings. If you see someone applying graffiti call 911 immediately! Graffiti is a crime -- not art!  If you see graffiti in your community, please report it.

We track graffiti information at the SPD to:
- identify what gangs are in the area
- identify locations for increasing gang activity
- identify rivals
- communicate with schools, businesses, and neighborhoods about what is happening in their areas
- potentially use the information for additional charges in sentencing.
