Natural Surveillance is a design concept directed primarily at keeping intruders under observation. This information is intended to teach people how to facilitate observation and create the effect of an increased perception of risk to the intruder. Two of the most effective ways to accomplish this is through landscaping and lighting.
Landscaping:
Trim your bushes and trees in front of windows so no one can hide behind them gaining access to your home.
A good rule of thumb is to trim bushes down to three feet high and trim trees up to six feet tall. This will generally take away any hiding place for a would be burglar to gain access to your home.
A well maintained yard shows a would be criminal that someone cares about the property and creates and unfriendly environment for them to prowl.

Lighting:
Position lighting around your property to protect entry points, such as windows and doors.

Ensure the lighting is in good working condition and is placed high enough so no one can tamper with it.

Try and use lighting devices that turn on automatically, either by motion or by darkness.
Frequently check the outside of your property at night for vulnerable hiding places or to ensure lighting is working properly.
