Multi Family Housing Inspection Program
The Multi-Family Inspection Program's purpose is to review existing multi-family dwellings for compliance with building code and safety standards. The Code Officer acts in the capacity of "Multi-Unit Inspector", and is directly responsible for the code compliance of existing apartments, hotels, motels, room & board facilities, retirement apartments, and homeless shelters. There are approximately 18,000 dwelling units in the City's program as of 2006. In addition to multi-family units, the Code Officer additionally works as the "Dangerous Building" officer, and is responsible for the investigation and litigation required to either abate or demolish a structure deemed dangerous by the Salem Building Official. Additionally, cases involving contamination by illicit methamphetamine manufacturing and/or storage are investigated and monitored. Finally, review of specific violations in other buildings, construction sites, and cases where illegal work is being performed with or without permit is also covered by this program.
