Public Nuisances/Health Hazards
Public nuisances and health hazards include large accumulations of rotting garbage, large accumulations of feces, abandoned ice boxes and containers that are dangerous to children, open pits and unprotected excavations, attractive nuisances to children (unguarded equipment/machinery) and dangerous pilings
Derelict and Boarded Building Abatement
Derelict and boarded buildings include structures that have been boarded-up, have been abandoned and are being used by children at play, are open to unauthorized entry, or are being unlawfully occupied by transients and/or others.
Industrial and Commercial Noise Abatement
Compliance Services shares noise enforcement responsibilities with the Salem Police Department. Compliance Services handles industrial and commercial noise violations. Salem Police Department handles the more typical noise complaints like loud stereos, loud parties and loud vehicles and complaints of this nature should be reported directly to them at the non emergency number (503) 588-6123.
Property Maintenance Requirements
Property maintenance violations include tarps on roofs, broken windows, missing siding, falling down gutters, open basement and crawl space areas, falling down fences and poorly maintained accessory structures.
Solid Waste & Junk Abatement
All solid waste must be placed a container that is rodent proof and has a tight fitting lid (utility trailers do NOT fit in this category). The only exception is for non-putrefiable recyclables and such items as tree limbs that are kept for only a short period of time and are not creating any other nuisance violations.
Grass and Weed Abatement
Grass and weeds must be trimmed to a height no greater than 10 inches.
Noxious Vegetation
It is unlawful to maintain any vegetation that is a fire hazard or causes a vision obstruction at driveways and intersections. In addition, poison oak, poison ivy and other rank and dangerous vegetation is prohibited.
Multi-Family Inspection Program
The purpose is to review existing multi-family dwellings for compliance with building code and safety standards. This includes apartments, hotels, motels, room & board facilities, retirement apartments, and homeless shelters.
Dangerous Buildings
The investigation and litigation required to either abate or demolish a structure deemed dangerous by the Salem Building Official. Additionally, case involving contamination by illicit methamphetamine manufacturing and/or storage of are investigated and monitored.
Zoning Code Violations
Investigation of Salem Zoning Code violations including land use, home occupations, vehicles parked in front and required yards, fence height and set-backs, building set-backs, RV habitation, farm animals, and business/occupations regulations.
Tree Preservation
Investigation of violations of the Salem Tree Ordinance. Refer to SRC Chapter 68 for more information.
