Am I required to give playing time to every participant present at the game?

Coaches are to play every participant present at games an equal amount of time or a minimum of half the game. Coaches do have the right to restrict playing time should children miss practices. Children should not, however, be benched for an entire game.

Can I move my practice time?

Due to limited gym space availability, all practice times are assigned by the Department. We ask coaches to stay with the assigned time and location. If you have a question about your practice times, please contact the City of Salem, 503-588-6261.

Does the City use a three-point basket?

Three-point baskets will be allowed in 6th-8th grade basketball leagues, if the facility has a three-point line marked on the floor.

The referree moved a player closer to the basket to shoot free-throws. Why is this allowed and how is it determined?

Basketball officials at the 4th and 5th grade level may use the 15-foot distance or any less distance to accommodate the players' size and ability. Grades 6th-8th use the regulation distance (15 feet).

What size ball do participants need?

  • Boys grade 4-8: "regulation" size ball
  • Boys and girls grades K-3: "junior" size ball
  • Girls grades 4-8: "regulation" size women's ball

6.

How are teams formed?

The Site/League Coordinator will randomly establish teams by what school the participant attends. They attempt to equalize teams by age and gener (for coed leagues) whenever possible.

7.

Do participants have to purchase a T-shirt? Team or individual photographs?

Site coordinators will provide parents and coaches with T-shirt information. K-1st grade classes will order T-shirts the first and second days of class. Grades 2nd-8th order T-shirts through the team coach. Youth sizes are $4.00, and adult sizes are $4.50 per shirt. There is an additional charge for first names and numbers on the shirts for grades 2nd-8th. Shirts are ordered through Salem Emblem shop, 1185 12th St SE.

Team and/or individual photographs are an optional item for parents/guardians to purchase.

8.

Can we register for youth sports programs over the phone?

No. All sports program registrations must be made in person, and fees paid in full at the time of registration. A computerized registration program is being developed; it's possible that the City may take phone/Internet registrations in the near future.  How to register

9.

A participant on my team was hurt while participaint in your program. Does the City have insurance?

No. The child's insurance coverage is the responsibility of the parent/guardian. In the event of a serious injury, staff will follow through with established procedures.

Do you have a phone we can use?

All facility and cellular phones are for emergency use only. If a facility doesn't have a phone available, you should identify a pay phone in the area.

11.

Do I have to complete a new volunteer application each season and/or sport?

Yes, a new application must be submitted for each program for which an individual is volunteering. The Volunteer Application/Agreement must be completed prior to the start of the volunteer assignment. Delay in completing an application may result in not being able to volunteer in the program.
