Salem Kids Relays Guidelines

Entry Informationphoto

1.      Each school must have one (1) head coach, on the infield, at all times.
2. Each elementary school may enter a boys’ team, a girls’ team, and/or a coed team for each grade at the first through fifth grade level.
3. Any one child may not run in more than one 400 meter race with the exception of the 1,600. The intent of this rule is to allow more children to participate by having four separate children make up the coed teams.
4. Participants may compete in their own grade level or one grade level up. A girl may race on a boys’ team but a boy may not race on a girls’ team. A coed team is two boys and two girls.
5. Volunteers from your school or organization are to select the teams, coach them on techniques, bring the team to the event, and help in the infield. How the teams are determined is your choice!
6. We ask schools to begin running "time trials" starting March 3, 2008, and begin practicing thereafter. Practices are to be no more than 1½ hours in length, and no more than twice a week. Schools or organizations not following this rule may be dropped from the Relays.

Mayor’s Mile Information

1.

Each elementary school may send a boys’ team and a girls’ team to the Mayor’s Mile Qualifier to be held on April 22, at South Salem High School, 6:00 p.m.

2. Each school that ran in the time trial will be notified on April 23 as to whether or not their school is one of the top 8 qualifiers for the boys’ race and the girls’ race.

RunnerRace Day Information

1.     Participants should arrive at the bull pen, located next to the tennis courts, 15 minutes prior to their grade's scheduled race time. The running order is boys, girls, and coed. Participants will exit the infield via the southwest gate, onto the derby track, after their grade level is done running.
2. Runners in all races must hold their lanes after passing off until they are called off the track by their escorts. Failing to stay in lanes or fouling other runners may result in disqualification. Time constraints do not allow races to be rerun.
3. Teams must provide their own batons.
4. Starting blocks will not be used.
5. Shoes designed to accommodate spikes or spiked shoes will not be allowed.
6. Coaches are encouraged to bring teams to the staging area to help organize the runners. As the runners are taken to their lanes by the escorts, we ask that the coaches remain in the center of the field. Please do not run along the track or allow your participants to do so as it is a safety issue. This item will be strictly enforced by meet personnel.
7. Only sports drinks and water are allowed on the infield. Food and snacks are not allowed. Schools are responsible for cleaning up their own trash by the end of the day.
8. Excessively large banners, tents, or awnings are not allowed on the infield. Tents may only be weighted down with items such as gallon jugs of water. No stakes allowed.
9. Access to the infield will be given only to adults with the correct ribbon. No unattended children are allowed on the field.
10. Each school will be given the following 17 ribbons which will allow access onto the field: 1 ribbon for the head coach, 15 ribbons for volunteer coaches (3 per grade level), and 1 ribbon for the principal.

Remember: These rules are to be guidelines and flexible enough to allow everyone to have fun. The meet director has final authority over all matters relating to the relay events. Times kept by the Optimist Club and the City of Salem are considered the official time.

Coaches Orientation and MeetingBoys practicing

An orientation meeting for all coaches will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7, at McCulloch Stadium. Important race information will be distributed at the meeting. Each school that attends the meeting will receive an extra infield ribbon and a parking pass.

The volunteer coaches are the reason the Salem Kids Relays go without a hitch. Please accept our deepest appreciation for your commitment and leadership — without you, it's not possible.
