Blood Pressure Screening

blood pressure cuff, photo Wednesday, May 14
10:00-11:00 am

Why be concerned about your blood pressure? Blood pressure is a measurement of the force that the blood exerts on the inner walls of the vessels, plus their resistance to the blood flow. Recent medical guidelines state that normal blood pressure for most adults is less than 120 (systolic) over 80 (diastolic). High blood pressure (also known as hypertension) is often referred to as the "silent killer" because it is usually without symptoms. Hypertension greatly increases the chances of heart attack, heart failure, kidney disease, and stroke.  No cost. Call the Salem Senior Center at 503-588-6303 to schedule an appointment.  Sponsored by Gibson Creek.

Adult Day Respite Program

Helping hands across an afghan, photoThe Among Friends Adult Day Respite Program at the Salem Senior Center is a specialized program that serves persons with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias and their caregivers.  At Among Friends, staff and volunteers focus on a person’s strengths and abilities to encourage socialization and participation in stimulating activities, such as exercise, art and music therapy, cognitive activities, lunch and an afternoon snack.  The friendly and caring environment helps create enjoyable experiences that increase feelings of self-worth and accomplishment.  The five hours of respite allows caregivers time for themselves to take a day off from their caregiving responsibilities.  The program meets on Tuesdays and Fridays from ll:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  A caregiver support group meets every Tuesday from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Time With Friends Friends walking down the road, photo

A New Program for People with Early Memory Loss

Thursdays
11:30am-2:30pm

This innovative new program is designed specifically for people experiencing early memory loss (EML). Time With Friends will link people with EML and their spouse, family member, or friend with others in similar situations so they can establish new social networks that will carry them along the journey through Alzheimer's disease or other dementias. The program meets every Thursday beginning October 25 and includes lunch, discussion, activities, and exercise. There will also be other opportunities for social engagement such as support groups, dinners, trips, and other events outside the Senior Center setting.

Professionals have long realized that people with EML have different needs from individuals in the middle to later stages of dementia. At the early stages of dementia, a person may still be employed and driving his own car. Most importantly, they are aware of their memory loss. People with EML are looking for opportunities for socialization, education, and involvement in the community. In addition, they often feel the need to talk and share, in confidence, with others who have similar memory problems. Time With Friends will offer a supportive, fun, and creative atmosphere where an individual and his spouse, family member, or friend can interact with others, enjoy outings in the community, and participate in stimulating activities that can strengthen memory.

If you would like to learn more about this innovative new program, contact Evelyn Ostermann at 503-588-6303.

Massage Therapy

Robert Ellestad, LMT

Chair massage is done in a specially designed chair that allows massage work on the neck and back. It is easy to sit in and gives a feeling of weightlessness. Typically, the massage on the chair is 15 minutes. Table massage lasts 60 minutes and takes place on a special massage table which is padded and covered with a clean sheet, allowing for special stretching and other useful massage techniques.

There are many benefits to having a massage including increased circulation and a decrease in stress. Massage is also found to be useful in helping injuries to heal quicker. There are many pains that can be lessened or alleviated with the use of massage.

Although there are many types of massage, the one Robert would like to introduce to you is shiatsu. This type of massage comes out of the Orient and is done clothed. You may find that this type of massage works well for you.

Make your appointment by calling the Salem Senior Center at 503-588-6303, or stop by the front desk.

OASIS

A Safety Program for Mature Adults

Tuesdays
May 6, 13, 20, and 27
12:30 pm

OASIS (Older Adults Striving for Independence and Safety) is a four-part educational series created to help promote health and safety for older adults. Through education, we are tyring to prevent injuries from happening.

Why is this needed? Accidents seldom "just happen" and many can be prevented. Because accidental injuries occur more often in later life and result in more serious injuries, attention to safety is especially important for older people. When accidents do occur, older people are often severely injured and tend to heal more slowly. While falls are the most common cause of fatal injury in older people, there are many other contributors to injury including motor vehicle crashes, medication errors, alcohol usage, and pedestrian-related injuries.

OASIS is a very effective tool in the ongoing effort to prevent injuries to older adults. Our goal is to promote healthy and safe lifestyles for people over the age of 65. Through education and discussion, we encourage people to take responsibility for their health care.

Presented by Salem Hospital. No cost. Call the Salem Senior Center at 503-588-6303 to register.
