A client came to Mid-Valley Women’s Crisis Service after being referred by OHSU where her child was admitted due to a very serious injury caused by her abusive partner. The woman and her four children needed a safe place to live away from the abuser. She found herself not knowing where to go and basically homeless because she did not have friends or family nearby. When the family came to the shelter, the mother did not work and had no income of her own. Through case management and support, she was able to get connected with resources to help her. She qualified for the Temporary Assistance for Domestic Violence Survivors grant through the Department of Human Services. She also began receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families from the Department of Human Services. She connected with housing and, once she had all her resources lined up, was able to move her family into their own apartment. The domestic violence left her in a condition of poverty because it was no longer safe to be with her partner who was providing for the family. The CDBG was important to the outcome because it helped to fund the case management while the client was in the shelter. Without the case management, the client would have never gotten safe so she could plan for longer term self-sufficiency.
