Action Level The concentration of a contaminant which, if exceeded, triggers a treatment or other requirement that a water system must follow.

CU

Color Unit
MFL Million fibers per liter
MCL Maximum Contaminant Level. The highest level of a contaminant that is allowed in drinking water. 
MCLG Maximum Contaminant Level Goal.  The contaminant level desired.
MREM Millirems (a measure of the radiation absorbed by the body)

NTU

Nephelometric Turbidity Unit. Unit used in water treatment for measurement of cloudiness

pCi/L

Picocuries per liter (a measure of radioactivity)

ppb Parts per billion.  One part per billion is the equivalent of 1/2 of a dissolved aspirin tablet in 1,000 bathtubs of water (approximately 50,000 gallons).
ppm Parts per million. One part per million is the equivalent of 1/2 of a dissolved aspirin tablet in a full bathtub of water (approximately 50 gallons).

TON

Threshold Odor Number. Unit of measure used to describe that level at which an odor is detected.  The higher the number, the more noticeable the odor.
Treatment Technique A required process intended to reduce the level of a contaminant in drinking water
