Downtown Interceptor

As part of the Program to provide for compliance with the Mutual Agreement and Order (MAO) between the City of Salem and the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), the City will be constructing a relief sewer. The limits of the improvement will extend from a location near Church Street SE at Pringle Creek south of the downtown area, to a termination point at River Road Park across from Fred Meyer North.

The project will be constructed in two phases. The Downtown Interceptor is the first phase of the relief sewer. It will extend from a location near Church Street SE at Pringle Creek south of the downtown area, to a termination point in Union Street NE at the Willamette River. This portion must be in service by December 31, 2004. The second phase is referred to as the Union Street Interceptor. It will extend from the end of the Downtown Interceptor to River Road Park. The Union Street Interceptor must be in service by December 31, 2009.

In the initial stage of the design of the Downtown Interceptor Project, several alignment alternatives for both the Downtown Interceptor and the Union Street Interceptor will be evaluated. The proposed routes include alignments through and around the downtown business district. Evaluation of the routes will be based on impacts to the community, the life cycle cost of the improvements, and the ability to comply with the mandated completion schedule. If you have questions regarding this project, please contact Cary Gaynor, PE, Project Manager, at 503-588-6211 or cgaynor@cityofsalem.net.
