Street Maintenance Section
The Street Maintenance Section of Public Works provides services such as asphalt and cement concrete pavement maintenance, roadside shoulder grading, alley maintenance, sidewalk repair, snow and ice response, and pothole repair.
Each summer City crews and contractors perform a number of pavement maintenance services that constitute the Neighborhood Street Rehabilitation Program. This program includes surface treatments such as slurry seals, chip seals, and chip seals. During the summer of 2005 City crews performed over 62,000 square yards of asphalt overlays on local and collector streets. Even so, a lack of funding for street maintenance has resulted in an increasing backlog of pavement rehabilitation work.
Pothole repair keeps us busy! As many as 3,000 potholes are repaired each year, and the number keeps growing as our streets age and wear.
During the winter months Street Maintenance staff constantly monitor the weather and pavement conditions of city streets. When needed, the City can field a force of six snowplows and additional vehicles that spread deicer and sanding rock on a round-the-clock basis.
