Citizens Advisory Traffic Commission (CATC) is a group of nine citizens chosen by the Mayor. The group was originally established in 1950 as a traffic safety council, but evolved into a traffic commission. Primary duties are to address controversial traffic issues. Other assignments may include conducting traffic safety campaigns, promoting traffic safety near schools, and reviewing Capitol Improvement Projects. Recommendations are made to either the Public Works Director or City Council. Members serve three-year terms and may serve two consecutive terms. For additional information, contact Kevin Hottmann, P.E., City Traffic Engineer, 503-588-6211.

Temporary traffic control permits are processed through the Traffic Engineering Section. Information on templates, applications, and current road conditions are available here.

Traffic Counts: Typically on a five-year cycle, we take a 24-hour count on all major streets using a hose counter. These counts are used by many for things such as work zone traffic control plans, transportation planning, traffic impacts analysis for development, and where best to place a business.

For additional information on the Transportation Services Division, please contact Mark Becktel, AICP, Transportation Services Manager, at 503-588-6211, or email mbecktel@cityofsalem.net.
