Description
Construciton of the new City of Salem Senior Center is underway! Completion of the new 30,000 square foot facility, at 2016 Portland Road, is expected in September 2008. The new Center will open its doors in October 2008, just north of its current location on Portland Road. Together with the private commercial and residential development to the north, the new Senior Center will serve as a catalyst for development in the North Gateway Urban Renewal Area.
Designs for the new facility were discussed with the Senior Center Advisory Commission and Friends of the Senior Center. The design was shared with the local neighborhood associations, Grant, Highland and Northgate at their regular meetings for input. City Council considered their feedback and approved the design on April 16, 2007. Opening bids took place on October 9th, 2007, and the Notice to Proceed was issued on October 16th .
The new facility will allow for expansion of program areas, such as the Wood Shop, Computer Lab, and Lapidary, and will provide room to grow and offer more leasable space for senior service organizations. Funds for the project will include proceeds from the sale of the existing Senior Center and a grant from the Urban Renewal Agency.
