Bridge built by Southern Pacific Railway to connect Salem with the west Willamette Valley

Description

This project will convert the historic Union Street Railroad Bridge and its associated timber trestle, built across the Willamette River in 1912-13, into a facility for pedestrians, bicyclists, and other non-motorized users.  The project will provide a critical half-mile link in the bicycle and pedestrian circulation systems for the community, the region, and the state.  Two large urban parks, Wallace Marine (114 acres) and Riverfront (23 acres), bookend this bridge and the conversion will connect their trail systems into a single, safe and pleasant, family-friendly network.

The Union Street Railroad Bridge project will improve bicycle and pedestrian safety and accessibility.  It will encourage use of alternative transportation modes, promote healthy forms of exercise like running, cycling, skating, and wheelchairing for both local and out-of-town users.  A special fund to accept private donations for the project has been established, click here for more information.

The project complements both the state-designated Willamette River Water Trail and a future footbridge project which will connect across Willamette Slough from the south end of Riverfront Park to Minto Brown Island Park (900 acres), adding fourteen miles of trails to the network.

Carter & Company, Inc., a Salem contractor, was awarded the construction contrac ton February 14, 2008.  They legally have a year to finish the project, but anticipate completion before then.  Repairs to the timber trestle portion of the bridge should begin in April 2008, with the first portions of the concrete decking to follow. Work will then proceed east across the bridge.
