Salem Cooling Locations and Heat Prevention Tips

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory and excessive heat watch for the Salem area. The heat advisory remains in effect from 12 p.m. Friday to 12 p.m. Saturday. The excessive heat watch is in effect beginning 12 p.m. Saturday through Sunday evening. Read more to see available cooling locations.

Applications for Short-term Rental Licenses in Salem Open July 12

June 20, 2017

On June 12, 2017, the City Council approved amendments to the Salem Revised Code making it easier to operate small-scale forms of short-term commercial lodging such as those found on home-sharing websites like Airbnb, FlipKey, and others. Residents interested in engaging in short-term, and accessory short-term rentals can apply for licenses on July 12, 2017.

It’s Time to Plan for Salem’s Night Out Against Crime

National Night Out is an evening dedicated to bringing residents and police together to stand united against crime through neighborhood block parties. It is celebrated across the nation each year on the first Tuesday in August. Block parties wishing to receive a visit from a special police team should register early, as the slots for officer visits fill quickly.

Salem Public Library Chosen as Sole NASA@ My Library Partner in Oregon

The Salem Public Library is one of only 75 libraries nationwide chosen by NASA to be a NASA@ My Library partner, and is the only library in Oregon chosen for the program. The partnership is a grant that provides resources, training, and funding to increase community education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Two Murals Coming to Downtown Salem This Summer

June 9, 2017

The City of Salem’s Public Art Commission approved two new murals for downtown Salem. Beginning June 22, artist Damien Gilley will begin work on the “Mirror Maze” mural on the short, rounded wall in the alley between Commercial and Liberty Streets NE. The 560 square foot mural will be unveiled on July 5, 2017 as part of the First Wednesday event. Artist Blaine Fontana will begin his “Waldo Stewards” mural on the Chemeketa Parkade’s east stairwell on July 10. This 1,819 square foot mural will wrap the parkade stairwell and will be finished the week of July 24.
